Abstraction, Photography and Play: An Experimental Approach to Photography

[Course Notes]

An experimental photography course dedicated to pushing the boundaries of the creative process of producing an image. Each week a different style of photographic abstraction will be covered and students will have the opportunity to explore the techniques themselves in a supportive and playful environment with plenty of group discussion.

Eva Kalpadaki is an emerging photographer with a strong interest in abstract photography.  She recently completed her PhD entitled “The Empty Space in Abstract Photography: a Psychoanalytical Perspective” at the University College for The Creative Arts in Maidstone.

Creative Digital Darkroom

with Denise Felkin

For anyone wanting to learn about digital photography techniques, the course covers how to use the camera and its advanced controls, composition, studio lighting, photo-editing techniques and presentation.

Projects will include natural light landscape photography and a professional studio lighting exercise. Students should provide own digital camera and may bring own laptops if available.

Denise Felkin studied Fine Art at University of Sunderland. She is a freelance creative photographic artist with extensive experience in public visual art installations. Her work has been exhibited at many art galleries and festivals in the UK including directing the installation of the horse sculptures outside the Phoenix Brighton Gallery during the Brighton Fringe Festival 2009. She also has recently exhibited, Glastonbury Festival, The Rocket Festival in Spain and Brighton Photo Fringe, her portfolio reflects her festival work and also her travels around the world. www.denisefelkin.com

Performance/Sonic Art

Vocal Improvisation/Sound Workshop

with Bunty

[Course Notes]

Experiment with your voice and develop improvisation skills as a part of a group ensemble. We will explore sound, texture and rhythm using simple, fun techniques. The course will conclude with the option of performing at St. Andrews Church in Brighton, using the space in unconventional ways.

Bunty (AKA Kassia Zermon) received her BA (hons) in Music and Visual art from The University of Brighton in 2005.She has since become a successful solo artist, performing improvised experimental vocal looping sets; creating music live using only one mic and fx pedals. Bunty is an experienced improviser having collaborated with Carnival collective, Vole, Lyrikool Lipz (midlands beatbox champion) to name a few. She curates multimedia events throughout the country as part of the Beatabet collective and most recently produced a vocal looping show conducting a choir, dancers, film, and audience participation in a church setting. http://www.myspace.com/buntylooping

Analogue Sound Workshop

with Ian Helliwell

[Course Notes]

A one-day practical session focussing on analogue electronic music techniques using hands on tools and equipment. Each student will make their own tape loops, draw sound onto 16mm film, build a Junior Theremin kit and creatively solder a walkie-talkie circuit. All materials provided.

Ian Helliwell has produced music, super-8 films, electronic instruments, cinema and music programmes and light-show projections for concerts and club nights. Since the early 1990s he has been building and modifying 9v circuitry, developing his unique series of Hellitron tone generators, which are used for live performance and for the soundtracks to his super-8 films. In 2007 he designed and built an analogue synth, the Hellisizer 2000, and during 2008/09 he has been making The Tone Generation, a radio series, which traces the early development of electronic music. www.ianhelliwell.co.uk

Performance Lab

[Course Notes]

This course will give you the knowledge and confidence you need to make performance art. You will be guided through the fundamental techniques within an entertaining but challenging environment, and will be given the option of developing either several short or one long piece. The sessions cover the basic performance structure, documentation, site-specific work, performance for camera, working to a given theme, and ‘performance deconstruction’.

Victoria Melody is a curator, filmmaker and performer, showcasing Nationally and Internationally including Artsway, New Forest; Centre for Contemporary Art, Russia; Study Gallery, Poole and Arts Claims Impulse Gallery, Berlin. As part of a solo exhibition a publication entitled 'Ventilation’ was commissioned by and available from Millais Gallery, Southampton. Noisemusic

with wil vole

A series of improvisation workshops, suitable for participants with or without any music theory but a desire to experiment with sound. You will be guided through a series of loose and spontaneously adaptive exercises on the borders between music and noise.

The course is an opportunity to have fun sonically whilst developing an ear for sound. So come with an open mind and anything you can use to make a sound (be it a rubber band, a Hoover, a French Horn or whatever you can lay your hands on!)

wil vole is an artistic/musical director with over twenty years experience. He is skilled in improvisation and composition techniques and his Brighton based group ’Vole’ are known for their experimental, abstract soundworks.  Their new album ‘Sea Shells Listening’ was recently released and his improvised ‘Voleradio’ show is now in its seventh year. www.voleradio.com

Video Art

with Alvaro Collar

This workshop is a theoretical and practical approach to video art. You will learn about different trends and their critical context and the main artists working on video, encouraging a thoughtful critical review of the most representative video art pieces. Students will also develop a short piece of their own, learning the basic skills needed to plan and create a video. Please bring your own video camera or any video recording device and you may also bring your laptop.

Video Art from Found Footage: Recycling YouTube

This workshop takes a practical approach to the development of video-art pieces made by using videos available on YouTube and other online video sharing websites. You will learn how to use online shareware editing programs and will develop a video created from online found footage. Please bring your own wireless laptop if possible.

Little Pieces: A Return to Collage

with Thea Willcocks

[Course Notes]

A one-day workshop which explores notions of fragmentation, memory and image through collage techniques, including masking, stitching, tracing, layering and cutting. Working from photographs, postcards, found imagery and text we will start to explore the connections between image, memory and identity. Please bring photographs, postcards, paper or card memorabilia to work from. A digital camera is useful but not necessary.

Thea Willcocks is a London based artist working with Drawing, Embroidery and Installation. She has a BA in Fine Art from Newcastle University and an MA in the Visual Language of Performance from Wimbledon College of Art. The Art of Colour

with Theresa Sundt

This course, on the art of mixing and combining colours, will look at the perception of colour, how light effects colour and the psychological meanings of colour. Working on various compositions you will learn to use hue, value and colour intensity to create harmonies and increase the expressive qualities of your work and become a great colourist. Basic materials will be provided and a list of suggested materials for purchase will be given out on the first class.

Theresa Sundt has been professionally involved with colour through teaching and art, mainly textiles, painting and illustration. Her contagious enthusiasm for colour broadened with a Colour Therapy diploma and for the last ten years she has been lecturing internationally on Colour Awareness for the corporative world, schools and holistic practices. Her book ‘the Art of Colour Therapy’ was recently published.

Acrylic Painting

with Chris Gilvan-Cartwright

You will experiment with acrylic painting and learn a wide range of acrylic techniques and mediums guided by a professional artist. This is a practical course for artists wishing to extend their knowledge of acrylic painting processes and further their creative possibilities. Each session will begin with a tutor led demonstration. Each week there will be a different theme, either abstract or representational, to work from in order for the student to discover for themselves the week's chosen technique. A brief constructive feedback crit will close the session. A materials list will be provided at first session.

Chris Gilvan-Cartwright studied painting and illustration at Central St Martins and has an MA in Fine Art from University of Brighton. He exhibits internationally and regularly with three London galleries. He is a well known illustrator, commissions include: Sunday Times, Penguin Books, over twenty children's books and the logo for BBC Proms.

Introduction to Printmaking

This eight-week course begins with several types of monoprinting,  then introduces intaglio and relief printing techniques using simple materials such as lino, card and plastic. You will learn to use a printing press but most of the techniques need no specialist equipment you can continue working with them outside the course. Drawing

Drawing Outside the Studio

Working with a range of drawing media, mostly in sketchbooks this course takes students outside the studio to draw. The aim is to develop confidence and research skills.

Sites will include exterior and interior locations (within walking distance from Phoenix Brighton) such as parks or gardens, the beach and museums. Each session will focus on a particular skill. Meet at Phoenix Brighton at the start of each session to discuss the work of an artist to inspire us.

Experimental Drawing

Intensive Untutored Life Drawing

A three-day intensive life drawing session. This is an opportunity to rapidly develop your drawing skills and experiment with different approaches and media. Aimed at those with some experience in life drawing. Please bring your own preferred materials.

Juliet Kac is a professional portrait painter and works extensively from the model.  With an MFA in Fine Art from Auckland University and a PhD from The University of Brighton on the relationship between music and painting, she currently teaches oil painting, life drawing and portraiture.

Tutored Life Drawing

Contemporary Craft

Puppetry for Artists: Simple and rod puppets one-day workshop

with Isobel Smith

A one-day course to make a simple hand and rod puppet using soft toys or dolls (you must be prepared to chop them up!), then learn basic puppeteering techniques to make it come alive. The course will cover ideas generation and design, through to completion of your puppet.

There will be a brief demonstration of puppeteering skills followed by the opportunity to animate your puppet and explore and develop its character to music. An eclectic selection of music will be provided, feel free to bring a special track of your choice. Some materials for making puppets will be provided, if you have a preferred toy or doll then please bring it along.

Isobel Smith is a puppet maker and puppeteer, she studied design at Central St Martin's and Fine Art at University of Brighton. Isobel is mentored by the prestigious Green Ginger puppet company in Bristol and performs regularly with her musicians Foster&Gilvan as Badstock Productions at Jane Bom-Banes in Brighton and various locations in London and Brighton. Her company, Gravy Boat Puppets was launched in 2007. She is a Creative Partnerships Practitioner in several Sussex schools. Isobel is currently converting a caravan into a touring puppet theatre.

Designing and Making Contemporary Jewellery

with Clara Vichi

[Course Notes]

For students of all abilities who are interested in making their own original contemporary jewellery designs in silver and base metals, with an emphasis on exploration, experimentation and innovation.

Beginners will learn the foundational skills of piercing,filing, soldering and polishing whilst more experienced students can develop and build on their skills with punch making, etching, roller pressing, inlaying and chain making.

Students will need to have a piercing saw with 3/0 blades and a sketchbook. Most standard tools will be available for use during the course however some specialist hand tools may need to be purchased for individual projects. Silver will be available to buy from the tutor or independently as needed.

Clara Vichi is a contemporary jewellery designer and maker, working in mixed metals using calligraphy and typography as her inspiration, and etching as a process. She holds a Masters Degree at the Royal College of Art.

Children's Book Illustration Taster for Artists

with Chris Gilvan-Cartwright

A practical and informative course run by an illustrator with twenty years experience. For artists and authors who would like to find out more about illustrating for Children’s Books. Through series of self-generated projects students receive practical feedback on their artwork. With guest speakers from the world of Children's Book illustration this course will be perfect for anyone who wants to illustrate for a children's story they have written or exists already. The course will also cover how to get commissions, put together a folio, find an agent and focus your work for freelance illustration. Please bring own preferred materials.

Chris Gilvan-Cartwright studied painting and illustration at Central St Martins and has an MA in Fine Art from University of Brighton. He exhibits internationally and regularly with three London galleries. He is a well known illustrator, commissions include: Sunday Times, Penguin Books, over twenty children's books and the logo for BBC Proms.
