Special Events ARCHIVE 2008

Saturday 26 January 2008, 11am – 4pm

For the 2nd year running Phoenix will bring together the best of Brighton’s lively jumble sale culture and its enterprising artist population for a one day with ‘Art Junky’ an indoor winter flea market that can’t be missed.

Are you an artist or maker who has older work for sale at affordable prices, maybe you make cheap but irresistible jewellery or sculpture from found objects? Perhaps your flat is filled with too many of your favourite things, and you want to make space for something new….

This is your opportunity to set up a stall in a bustling market setting, sell directly to the punters, and earn some extra cash just after Christmas.

We will be targeting buyers on the look out for affordable art, unusual cast-offs, and “junk stall” inspiration.  For only £13 you can have or share a stall.

If you are too busy to have a stall we are also having an auction…

Art Auction

Do you have older art works that you no longer sell at your market rate? Phoenix will be auctioning off art works on behalf of artists (with 50% commission of sales going towards fundraising for Phoenix Arts Association - a charitable organisation).

Deadline to receive Art works is January 15th 2008.

For more details or if you wish to apply for a stall, contact Sara at sara.duffy@phoenixarts.org or call (01273) 603700 ext 204

Meet/Network/Learn - ARC Networking and Social Event
Tuesday 5 February 2008, 6-8pm
Phoenix Gallery

As part of the Sally Lai curated exhibition ‘EVERYDAY ANOMALIES’ at Phoenix Gallery in Brighton, Fabrica in partnership with Phoenix is hosting an ARC Networking and Social Event with participating artists Pak Sheung-Chuen and Kwan Sheung-Chi.

The Hong Kong based artists will give a presentation on the artistled Fotanian studios, one of the key studios collectives in the Pacific Rim and an important focus for the new Chinese art.

The event is an exciting opportunity to learn about international artist-led initiatives and how artist networks operate in what is one of the fastest growing and most vibrant developing arts scenes in the world. The event also offers the chance to meet and discuss both networks and practices with fellow artists and arts professionals from Brighton and Hove, the South East region and Hong Kong.

'Everyday Anomalies' features existing work and new commissions by four of Hong Kong’s most exciting and active artists: Pak Sheung-Chuen, Luke Ching, Kwan Sheung-Chi, and Kam Lai Wan.

The exhibition is part of China Now the biggest ever celebration of Chinese Culture in the UK. See www.chinanow.org.uk for more details.

ARC provides information, guidance and support for creative practitioners through its resource at aspex in Portsmouth & its partner organisations across the South East. It aims to develop a strong network of artists and encourages the sharing of information and ideas. See www.aspex.org.uk/arc.htm for more details.

Chinese food and drinks will be provided.

Artists Talk
Kim Fielding, Director of tactileBOSCH 15 April
Phoenix staff and artists at tactileBOSCH

Phoenix staff and artists – Vicky Melody, Anna Dumitriu, Sara Duffy and Lucy Greenaway successfully applied for funding from NAN to Go and See artists group tactileBOSCH in Cardiff.

After a very long train journey we attended the closing event at tactileBOSCH’s gallery for recent MA Slade fine art show, the party moved over to a bar after everyone enduring sub zero temperatures for long enough in the gallery which was open to the sky in several places.

The next day we met with director Kim Fielding who kindly showed us around the complex which offers studio space to artists and a changing programme of exhibitions in several gallery spaces. We were greatly encouraged by our talks with Kim and immediately saw there were many parallels between Phoenix and tactileBOSCH.

Kim Fielding will visit Phoenix Arts Association to give a talk introducing tactileBOSCH to the Brighton arts community and we intend to develop studio and exhibition exchanges that allow us to work together to widen opportunities for artists within our networks and create a mutual support/advice structures.

‘INCIDENT’ YOUTH PROJECT

Eight young people from the local area of Hanover and Tarner came to Phoenix Brighton to look at Sarah Pickering’s exhibition and participate in a workshop led by Phoenix artist, Angela Carter.

The young people spent time considering Pickering’s photographs followed by a visit to Hove Fire Station’s Smoke House (a space used to train firemen).

They explored the space and took their own photographs using disposable cameras. They also had the chance to get on board a fire engine and try out the training pole!

Afterwards, they came back to Phoenix Brighton where Angela led a workshop inspired by the marks in Pickering’s photographs using sandpaper, knitting needles and forks to scratch into inked acetate as well as drawings on paper, using their hands with charcoal and boot polish to create mono drawings.

They worked together as a team to put together a small exhibition of their work, themed on the idea of a forensic/photographic laboratory.

The workshop was part of the ‘Young Phoenix’ programme.

The participants were:
James, Izzi, Rani, Frankie, Yola, Florian, Polly

Sara Samson - Outreach co-ordinator
Angela Carter - Workshop facilitator
Kate Hickmott - Co-ordinator of Hanover Young Peoples Art Project
Simon Herbert and Dave Statham of Hove Fire Station, Blue Watch
