'An Image of the World'

Diagram of the stars - a symbol of the macro-world is filled with an image of the micro-world - streets, city, periphery. It is a quest for a contemporary form of a mandala, a spiritual map of the world.

Phoenix studio member Caitlin Heffernan was selected to live and work in Prague for one month.

Caravan Park series 1

Caravan

A central motif in my practice has been the caravan. I began drawing the caravan where I used to go and stay as a child when I visited my grandparents in Cornwall. I found an old photo of my mum, sister and me in that caravan and I began to try and recreate and capture that moment. In trying to remember what it was like then and who I was- I found I couldn't fully put the pieces together or capture the essence of that time.

I wanted my drawings, models and photographs of the caravan to convey the precariousness of such moments in memory and the failure and unreliability of memory and the process of remembering is reflected in the re-making and reconstruction of the paper caravan.

ARTIST RESIDENCY
Clare Strand

Clare Strand

Clare Strand
Clare Strand

Clare’s proposal for the residency project was to conduct research and develop a new body of work exploring the supposed psychic emanations from the adolescent child, and the presumed ability of the camera to accurately record such phenomena. In fact Clare was able to work through several of her current projects using the studio space as a base.

Clare Strand exhibits both nationally and internationally and a monograph of her work will be published by Photoworks and Steidl in 2007.

Artist Talk: Thursday, August 18, 6pm

Braziers Residency
Huub van der Loo

Dutch artist Huub van der Loo was selected to live and work in Brighton for one month. This residency funded by The Arts Council England and organised by Braziers International Workshops allowed Huub to spend an extended funded period of time in the UK. This project led on from Braziers International Workshops, which is held annually at Braziers Park in Oxfordshire.

Huub became very interested in Brighton’s dilapidated West Pier and began to talk to passers by about its demise and possible restoration. This led him to devise a project to make a film using the interview as a central theme. Huub having never used video before worked with Phoenix studio member Anna Dumitriu to edit his material together. The resulting ‘unfinished’ work was shown at the Open Studio event on the 8th of October.

Huub is still working on his West Pier film at home in Amsterdam. We will be working with him to find a suitable venue to show the finished piece. Check this site for more information.

Huub Van Der Loo gave a talk and slide show of his work on the 28th September at 6 pm, and an open studio on the 8th October 3:30 - 5:30.
